Items Every Apartment Dweller Should Own

By Emmett Timmons

Living in an apartment can have several advantages, and many people actually prefer the simpler lifestyle to owning a home. It allows for some extra flexibility for those who don't stay in one place for too long, and it often means cleaning is a much easier process. But one of the disadvantages is the lack of space, both for storage and moving around. However, it's possible to free up some of that space by using multifunctional products that use space efficiently. Here are a few items that apartment renters should consider.

Working on a big meal in an apartment kitchen can often be a challenge. Counter space is often limited. But if you've got the floor and wall space to handle it, it can be a good idea to invest a baking rack or microwave stand. You'll have more room for mixing bowls or cutting boards or what have you with the microwave on a separate rack. Some models come with shelving and hooks as well, so that you can store wine bottles, pots, pans, spoons and spices.

Closets are the go-to solution to store medium-sized items that you don't use all that much. But the space in there is limited as well. One way you might be able to squeeze some more storage out of it is to put in an extra shelf or two. You might be able to fit a few extra sets of clothes or shoes by adding shelving.

Slow Cookers- Slow cookers have infinite value for the renter. They can cook a variety of foods, even baked goods, and help eliminate numerous pots and pans that could take up too much space in the cupboards.

Drawers - Never underestimate how much a drawer can hold. Get a bed frame that has drawers underneath of it for extra linens. Or get an above toilet shelf for hold all that extra toiler paper. Try to find furniture that makes use of unused space underneath items or that makes use of unused vertical space.

Stemless Wine Glasses - Yes, drinking wine out of long stemmed glass looks classy, but how odd would drinking milk out of one be? Stemless wine glasses offer more versatility. Not only do they look good with wine in them, but they can be used for a variety of other drinks as well, such as mixed drinks or a homemade iced latte.

Even if you have a one-bedroom apartment, it's possible to make a more comfortable space for guests to stay than an air mattress by investing a couch-bed. Not only will you not have a deflated air mattress in the closet, a real bed is much more comfortable any way. The couch will be heavier and a bit pricier, but it might be worth it for apartments without a guest room.

Hooks can be a simple, cheap and effective way to store things. A row of coat hooks can be used for garments, hats and keys, some bathroom hooks can be used for towels. You could even hang a patterned blank as wall art with hooks. Hooks are a minimally destructive way to store items in a readily-accessible way that might otherwise require a shelf or table.
