Knowledge Of Foam For Cushions

By Kenneth Wesley

There are soft furnishings which normally accompany some items of furniture, and these are designed to make their users as comfortable as possible. Comfort, in these enhancers, usually emanates from a specifically designed material, for that particular purpose. The same kind of material, therefore, that is utilized for sofas, mattresses, and chairs, is a similar foam for cushions designing.

A cushion can be built for the purpose of decorating a sofa seat, or it could be utilized as a buffer between the human back and a solid surface. It is even possible for a cushion to be exclusively designed for boat usage. The many varieties of purposes that cushions can serve, may give rise to their many varied appearances, according to what customers desire.

The possibilities exist for shapes like triangles, squares, cylinders, wedges, or circles, and even letters such as L or T to be used to make a cushion. The common shapes, though, are usually circles and squares, except for the unique ones used to match boat seats. It is normal for customers to be requested to provide unambiguous instructions with their detailed measurements, when submitting diagrams to be used in cushion manufacturing.

Depending on the purpose and use of a particular item, the foam required may be cut relatively thin or thick. This is because the thinner the material is, the softer will normally be the end product. Hence a cushion that is intended for cuddling is usually thinner than the thick variety made for the purpose of providing support.

It appears that foams are different, and each variety has properties that are unique to it. For example, open or closed cells may form foams, and these result in many and varied end products. When foams have closed cells, they are more springy or bouncy, and are better able to resist liquid penetration, but foams that have open cells have a tendency towards softness and flexibility.

A comparison of these two types of foams, with each other, seems to reveal advantages that are unique to each. For example, it would seem that there is more advantage to using foams that possess open cells rather than those having closed ones. This is demonstrated by the open cell properties of breathability, conformability, and softness found in those foams.

Nevertheless, foam that has closed cells should be selected over open cell ones, if a light, washable cushion is preferred. This is because closed cell foams highlight those specific qualities. In spite of all this, though, there are still manufacturers who gravitate towards foams possessing open cells, since they appear to be more durable. The implication is that more usage is anticipated when employing those particular types of foams.

In order to source specific foam for cushions, a few things require consideration. The varied purposes for which a cushion can be used, may give rise to foams capable of fulfilling those needs. Various kinds of foams have a variety of properties, and the properties cause variations in the furnishings that can be produced in a number of qualities, shapes, and sizes.
