Maintaining Peel And Stick Vinyl Tiles For Best Results In Your House

By Serena Price

Having gone out of fashion in the 80's, peel and stick vinyl tiles are now making a come back within the building trades. There are several different reasons this happened, chief among them is its simple insulation and easy maintenance. It is amazing how easy to clean and durable this flooring material can be.

Almost all vinyl flooring is durable, attractive and very long lasting even when subjected to the demands of many homes high traffic areas. Luckily keeping it clean and looking great is easy and often requires only a little effort and few materials. With proper maintenance many floors could conceivably last the lifetime of most homes.

Begin by preventing dirt, stains and various abrasions before they occur to your floor. These things will break down the finish on the tile's surface over time and use. Always use a quality doormat placed in front of any entryways to catch heavy debris and rugs to help protect any high traffic areas.

If you need to move anything, plan to always put something down to protect the floor. Plastic, plywood and even rugs work nicely for this stuff. You should also have some type of coasters placed under the furniture and table legs to assist with preventing scratches with everyday use.

One of the best ways to clean up your flooring is to use plain tap water with an inexpensive sponge mop. Always clean up any spills as quickly as possible so they do not set and cause stains. If you use a vacuum, wrap the wheels with a layer of duct tape to soften them so they do not mark the finish on your flooring.

For all around cleaning or difficult stains about a gallon of warm water mixed with about a cup of apple cider vinegar makes a good solution for general purpose floor cleaning. If you require disinfecting toss in white vinegar instead. If you have dirt and wax layers, several drops of liquefied dish washing soap helps break all that debris and dirt up where ever it is. To add luster drop on some baby oil and mix the solution well.

There are a few things you should try avoiding. Using any abrasive pads or steel wool can often cause scratches and dull your finish even when they get used lightly. Many abrasive cleaners or mop and shine mixes will look good to start with, but leave a thin film that builds up over time. This is also true with most paste wax or solvent polishes too. High strength ammonia or cleaning products which use it can act to break down the inside structure of the flooring and cause noticeable cracks.

After mopping your peel and stick vinyl tiles always mop it again with plain water. This will prevent any build up of soap or other detergents and waxing agents. There may be times when you do not have the time for all this. If you find yourself in a rush you can always dry mop it. These floors are tough and can take it.
