Tips For Choosing Good Staircase Contractor

By Jayne Rutledge

That exciting moment has finally come! It feels like nothing on the earth surface can stand between you and your new stairway system that will put the final touches on your building. However, before you hire any staircase contractor, you should take a moment to ask yourself whether you have made the right choice. There are many cases where stairway projects have ended in a disaster and the common cause is almost always inexperienced and non compliant service provider. Unfortunately, it is the client who always ends up losing in such situations. Below are tips to find you identify good contractors and avoid disaster.

You need to realize that the best contractors do not even need to advertise themselves in order to get contracts. Most of their projects come from repeat customers and referrals. As such, do not be confused by the biggest advert on yellow pages or newspaper. You should also compare charges. This will obviously vary depending on the outworker you are talking to. It does not mean that the most expensive one is the best and vice versa but you should avoid those contractors who are charging ridiculously low prices.

A good outworker should also have a valid license of operation. The conditions under which such license will be issued varies depends on your state but you can be sure that there will be thorough vetting. The license can therefore serve as evidence that the holder is competent.

Every construction work has some risks that come with it and stairway construction is not exceptional in this. For instance, one of the tradesmen may slip during the work and get injured. So to be on the safe side, only deal with contractors who carry adequate insurance cover otherwise you will be forced to take responsibility. Adequate here means that he should have both personal injury cover as well as liability cover.

You should also seek to find out how long your potential service provider has been in this field. As you are investing a lot of resources in your staircase project, the last thing you want is somebody with little or no experience at all. Do some research about how long the service provider has been in this practice as it can really help you ensure quality stairway.

To confirm that what your prospective outworker says is true, you should also ask him for references. When asking for reference, ask for the recent ones and those who have had similar projects like yours. If the contractor dilly dallies to give you reference, treat this as a red flag. He is probably hiding something from you.

Once you identify someone you think meets the bill, the next step is to have him sign a contract. This is a very important step but most people ignore it. Contract will help protect your interest from unscrupulous contractors who give big promises and fail deliver on them. A good contract should indicate nature of the job; whether it is repair work or new construction, it must also indicate starting date and expected finishing date.

These are the most important attributes that a good staircase contractor must have. Just in case he operates in a different state, remember to find out whether his license is recognized in your state. In addition to license, some projects also require one to have license before they start working on them. Your contractor should also have one.
