A Jewish History Timeline Poster

By Anita Ortega

The story of the Jews is fascinating. It is of immense importance to Jews, of course, since their development as a people is also that of their religion. It's also of interest to Christians, whose faith is inextricably connected with the Jews through the Word of God, prophecy, and Jesus Christ. A Jewish history timeline poster is a great way to keep things straight.

Jews have endured as a people through centuries of turmoil and conflict, being expelled from their homeland of Israel again and again and scattered throughout the world. It's a remarkable story, and a timeline is helpful in keeping it straight. Israel was restored as a homeland for the Jews after World War II and is of extreme importance to the balance of power today.

A timeline is a sequence of events in chronological order. They are usually graphic in nature but can be a simple list. Significant events are associated with the date of occurrence, at least as closely as existing evidence allows historians to judge. It's a great way to understand how the human race developed when important events that happened concurrently in different parts of the world can be placed together in time.

Creation is the beginning of this story, but the race is established about 2000 BC when Abraham and Sarah leave their native land to follow their God. They have a son, Issac, whose son Jacob has twelve sons who became twelve tribes. At the end of 400 years of slavery in Egypt, the population has exploded. Most people are familiar with at least the outline of the exodus and the 40-year trek to the 'promised land.'

After centuries of both peace and turmoil in Israel and Judea, the Jews became dispersed. However, they never lost their identity, even though they faced immense persecution. They were finally re-established as a nation in 1947 as a British protectorate and declared their independence in 1948.

The religion evolved over the years and consists of both written and oral traditions. The dates of significant publishing events are noted on the timeline along with wars, awards, and accomplishments. The publication of various parts of the Torah is listed, as are Nobel prizes won by scientists and doctors.

There are many different posters for sale online. Some of the more beautiful and colorful ones make great tools for the classroom and thoughtful Bar/Bat Mitzvah presents. Others are simple line graphs that are valuable for scholars and anyone interested in tracking major historic events through the ages.

Some can be downloaded for free. Others are beautifully illustrated and make great Bar/Bat Mitzvah gifts. This resilient people and their tiny nation - about the size of New Jersey - are of immense importance to the world, both in the past and today. From the time of Abraham to the tense situation in the Middle East today, Israel has been in the center of things whether they like it or not.
