In simple words Data recovery is basically recovering your lost data. In technical terms it is salvaging data from the damaged, failed, corrupted or inaccessible secondary storage media.
A variety of methods are used to recover the lost or damaged data which include hardware repair, disk imaging, from logical damage. Out of all the techniques which are used in the market, two are very common ones – Consistency Checking and Data Carving.
In Consistency checking, first of all the logical structure of the disk is scanned to make sure that it is consistent with its specifications. Both the chdisk and the fsdisk have to be checked for this. For, if the file system is sufficiently damaged, the consistency check can damage completely. If there is no problem than the error message can be printed and the problem corrected.
In Consistency checking the second issue which arises is the disregard of the data files. If the chdisk finds the data file to be out of place, it can delete the file without asking. But the problem arises when the files being deleted without asking are the important ones. In such a case the data recovery comes as a handy tool for any business organization.
The second method is the Data Carving. Data carving is a data recovery technique which allows the data with no file system allocation to be recovered from the identifying sectors. This method usually takes the raw sectors looking for specific desired sectors.

Logical damage is primarily caused by power outages which prevents the data to be completely written to the storage medium. The result is that the data is left in inconsistent state. Most of the programs come with a rudimentary system to repair this kind of damage. These include Mac OS X which has Disk Utility, Microsoft Windows has chkdsk, Linux has fsck utility. Other utilities like Test Disk can be useful for reconstructing corrupted partition tables.
Apart from the systems provided by the various operating systems, these days the Journaling File Systems such as NTFS 5.0, ext3 and XFS are also being used.
