As most of you will know iOS 5.1.1 was released by Apple today (7th
May 2012) and a lot of you have been waiting for the jailbreak. Well the
dev teams popular jailbreak tool, redsn0w, works with iOS 5.1.1. Unfortunately
its a tethered jailbreak (unless you have an old bootrom 3GS) meaning
that every time you want to reboot your device or the battery goes dead
you will have to plug your device into your PC or mac and run through
the jailbreak process again to boot up (instructions below).

NOTES:
- This is a tethered jailbreak
- This works with iOS 5.1.1 and 5.1 (both are tethered)
- This does not work with the iPad 2, iPad 3 or iPhone 4S
- This works with the following devices:
iPod touch 3G & 4G
iPhone 3GS/4
iPad 1
- If you have an old bootrom iPhone 3GS this will be an untethered jailbreak
- This works on windows and mac.
First of all you will need to download the following files from the links below:
Redsn0w:
Windows
Mac
iOS 5.1 (not 5.1.1) firmware file: http://bit.ly/vJezxl (no longer required)
Lets begin!
Step 1: Download Redsn0w from the link above, extract and open it
NOTE: If you’re on Windows Vista or Windows 7 then you should right click Redsn0w and set compatibility to windows XP (service pack 2) and then run it as the administrator
Step 2: Click “Extras” then “Select IPSW”, then select your iOS 5.1 (not 5.1.1) firmware file. Then go back.
Step 3: Hit “Jailbreak” and enter DFU mode by following the below steps or follow the on screen guide in redsn0w:
a. Make sure your device is plugged in and turned off then hold down the power button for 3 seconds
b. Continue holding the power button and start holding the home button for 10 seconds
c. Let go of power and continue holding home button for 15 seconds
Step 4: Select install Cydia and any other options you want except “Install custom bundles”.
Step 5: Click next then wait for your device to finish and reboot
Step 6: Close out of Redsn0w
Step 7: Open Redsn0w and go to “Extras”
Step 8: Hit “Just boot” and enter DFU mode again by following the instructions in step 2
Step 9: When you boot up you should have a working tethered jailbreak on 5.1.1
Remember, every time you want to reboot your device you will have to perform step 7 and 8.
UPDATE: With the latest version of redsn0w (0.9.11b2) you don’t have to point it to iOS 5.1. Just open redsn0w, click jailbreak and go from there. Updated download links are above.
